Multi award-winning

Since 2018, family-run Surfing Cow has been making delicious gelato using fresh whole milk from our farm on the South Devon coast. Our Jersey-cross cows produce the most fantastic, creamy milk which is what makes our gelato taste so great. Our production unit is based on the farm too, so at Surfing Cow the food miles are more like food metres, with just a few hundred between the milking parlour and the ice cream unit.

Fresh whole milk is transferred straight from the milking parlour every day, which we pasteurise and combine with double cream, sugar and skimmed milk powder overnight to create a silky smooth base for our gelato. Once the base mix has been aged overnight, we add flavours and inclusions and churn in to the gelato you know and love. From cow to cone in less than 24 hours! 


Our gelato is made in small batches using only the best ingredients around, many imported from Italy - the real deal! We also work with other local businesses, sourcing inclusions like fudge, brownies and cookies all from Devon producers. We make a huge range of flavours and these are available in 112ml & 500ml retail tubs, and 4 Litre & 5 Litre catering tubs. We also supply waffle cones that are made in the UK too. We do not handle any nuts on site and most of our products are gluten-free. Some of our ingredients come from suppliers that also make nut based products, so some flavours carry a 'may contain traces of nuts' warning.

Our flavours are also available by the scoop and in take home tubs from our Gelateria on the farm, which is open during the Summer season. 


Many of our flavours are award-winning, and we are proud to hold a number of Taste of the West and Food Drink Devon product awards. In 2022 our parlour won a prestigious GOLD award in the Taste of the West Hospitality Awards 'Specialist Retailer' category. In 2023 we were named Devon's Best Farm Processor and Devon's Farmer of the Year at the Devon Farm Business awards. In 2019 we were also the South West regional winner of the Rural Business Awards 'Best Rural Food or Drink Business 2019/20'. 



They make pretty special ice cream

Surfing Cow Ice Cream is made from our own high quality milk produced by our special cows. We make all the ice cream in our ice cream parlour, less than 100 metres down the road from the milking parlour at South Battisborough Farm, and within a few metres of the fields they graze in, overlooking Mothecombe beach.

Sun-bathed and with a sea view – our cows are spoilt, and they all seem pretty happy with their surroundings!



Doing our bit, one tub at a time

We are pleased to say that all of our 112ml, 500ml & 1L size tubs are 100% biodegradable and compostable! 


As a small business we think it's important to do our bit for the environment and to help our customers be more environmentally friendly when they buy our ice cream.


The tubs are made from paper and the individual 112ml sizes come complete with a wooden spoon in the lids. Our 4L & 5L tubs are still plastic, as currently the UK market doesn't supply paper tubs this size, but they are fully recyclable!
